  1. Preheat oven to 350*.
  2. In very large bowl combine ground beef, oatmeal, milk, 1/4 cup onion, salt, chili powder, 1/4 teaspoons garlic powder, and pepper.
  3. Shape into 1-inch meatballs.
  4. Place on 15x10x1-inch baking pan.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes or until no longer pink.
  6. Drain well.
  7. Meanwhile in medium bowl combine ketchup, brown sugar, 1/4 cup onion, liquid smoke, and 1/4 teaspoons garlic powder.
  8. Pour over meatballs.
  9. Bake for 10 minutes more or until sauce is heated through.
  10. Stir gently to combine sauce and meatballs.
  11. Serve.

Turned out to be a great meal and was a breeze to make. However, I did replace the ground beef with a ground soy beef "like" product which turned this into a hearty vegetarian meal. I was able to fool my friends at a potluck with this dish. Thanks for the post.

The liquid smoke MAKES these... my topping was a bit too thick to pour so I spooned it over the meatballs and it gave an excellent taste for very little efort. I will be making these again soon becuase DH commented that he especially liked these. Please see my rating system: 5 stars for this recipe simply becuase the addition of the topping with the liquid smoke turned ordinary meatballs into something different and tasty. Thanks!
